Lydia Carlton talks to fairies. Nobody believes a word of it. In nineteenth century Scotland, that gift makes her a curiosity at best, a liar at worst, and she scrapes by as a fairy doctor while the rest of the world files her kind under bedtime stories. Then a stranger named Edgar barges in, and he does not laugh. He needs her knowledge, badly enough to pull her out of trouble and hire her on the spot. He also claims a title that sounds like it came straight out of a legend: Earl of the Blue Knight. The job sounds simple. Edgar wants the sword of Merrow, an old relic tied to the inheritance of the Blue Knight's lands and the fairy folk who live there. Simple stops being the word fast. Edgar carries secrets the way other men carry coats, and every one of them seems to lead somewhere darker. Lydia can see fairies, but reading the man beside her turns out to be the harder trick. What exactly is Edgar hiding, and what happens to Lydia once the sword is finally in his hands?
