A slave girl arrives in the city of Tus with nothing to her name. She learns instead. Languages, numbers, medicine, the way a wound heals and the way a rumor spreads. Then the Mongols ride in, and the city that sheltered her turns to ash. They take what they want from the ruins, and what they want includes her. So she ends up in the great khan's camp, among felt tents and silk pavilions, where the real fighting never stops. Clans claw at each other. Wives and concubines behind their veils run their own quiet wars over who gets to whisper in the ruler's ear. Say one wrong thing here and it's over. Sitara has no family left, no allies, no army. What she has is everything she was taught back in that Persian house. Grief could have finished her. Instead she picks survival, even though every face around her belongs to the people who burned her home. Knowledge is the only blade she carries, and somehow she climbs closer and closer to the man who holds half the world. Will the empire that took her ever suspect that she is taking it right back?
