In 1924, in the tiny Alpine kingdom of Sauville, Kazuya Kujou is the new kid at a fancy boarding school. He's from Japan, and his black hair and dark eyes are enough for the other students to call him the Black Reaper and keep their distance. One afternoon he goes to the library looking for ghost stories, spots a single golden hair on the stairs, and follows it out into the garden. There sits Victorique de Blois, tiny as a porcelain doll and bored out of her mind. She doesn't care about legends. She solves murders that stump the city police, just to have something to do. So when a ghost ship called the Queen Berry shows up exactly the way the schoolyard rumor describes it, Kazuya's ghost stories suddenly stop being stories. Victorique's curiosity drags them both aboard, and the ship may be the key to something far worse than a haunting. He wanted a scary tale to pass the time. She wanted a puzzle worth her brain. What happens when the puzzle turns out to want them back?
