In this future, a body is just hardware. Swap flesh for steel, plug your brain straight into the net, and you get strength no human ever had. Criminals got the same upgrade, and the crimes they commit now are strange, ugly, and hard to even name. So the Japanese government built Section 9, a small police unit that handles the cases nobody else can touch. Then a hacker called the Laughing Man shows up. He is an A level threat, and he does not steal money or crash servers. He erases faces from photographs, hijacks broadcasts mid sentence, and leaves a smiling logo behind like a signature. Section 9, led by Aramaki and Motoko Kusanagi, starts chasing him across Japan, and every clue pulls them deeper into something bigger than one man. Motoko leads a team that is half machine herself, hunting a ghost she cannot see, in a country wired so tight that anyone could be him. And when the trail keeps folding back on itself, the real question is not who the Laughing Man is, but whether Section 9 is the one being hunted.
