Tsukasa Mizugaki bombs his college entrance exams, and it looks like his future is dead in the water. Then a few phone calls get him a job at Sion Artificial Intelligence, the only company in the world that makes Giftias: androids so lifelike you would never spot the difference. They laugh, they cry, they remember your birthday. People fall for them all the time. Here is the catch. Every Giftia has an expiration date. Nine years and four months, give or take, and then the memories start to rot and something dangerous takes their place. Tsukasa gets assigned to the unit that goes door to door taking these androids away from the families who love them. His new partner is Isla, a tiny, quiet Giftia who happens to be the best retrieval agent on the team. She hands people tissues while they cry. She has a few years left on her own clock. Day by day, Tsukasa learns the job, and day by day, he starts feeling something for the girl sitting next to him. Her timer keeps counting down anyway. When he finally works up the nerve to tell her, what exactly is he asking her to do with whatever time she has left?
