Mako Kawai can cook just about anything she watches on a screen. Her tiny apartment smells like simmering broth and toasted spices, and she never shares a plate with anyone. In elementary school she was the loud one, the kid who dragged everybody outside. Now she eats alone, skips the crowded cafeteria, and practices conversations in her head that never happen. Then Shinon sits down next to her in a lecture hall, same grin as always, and suddenly Mako is being pulled toward a table with Tsutsuji and Kurea and a plan for a Food Culture Research Club. Four members needed. Mako says no. She says it more than once. The club needs her, though, and the food keeps needing to be made, and every dish she cooks drags up some memory she thought she had buried. Family dinners. Old friends. A version of herself she stopped believing in. Joining means sitting in busy restaurants, meeting strangers, letting people taste what she makes. Staying home means another silent meal in front of a glowing screen. Can someone who has spent years avoiding everyone really learn to eat at a full table again?
