Dongguo Xiaojie turned sixteen in the year everything went wrong. Her mother, the only family she has ever known, fell ill overnight. Not a normal sickness either. Something the healers call a Grave Illness, and nobody can say what causes it or how to stop it. So the girl packs up and leaves home, with no map and no plan, just a direction and a hope. Her sworn older brother Mo Zixuan comes along, and so does a strange young man who calls himself Life's Hardship. Two traveling companions, one of them a mystery wrapped in a smirk. They barely make it past the first village before strangers start attacking them. Again and again. Travelers, locals, people who should have no reason to care about a sick woman in a faraway house. Nobody on this road is who they seem, and every fight feels less like bad luck and more like a setup. Who wants to keep a sixteen year old girl from reaching her mother, and why does Life's Hardship keep smiling like he already knows?
