Eight hundred years ago Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of Xianle, loved by the people and respected by his equals. Young, brilliant, and already a martial god in the heavens. Then he got kicked out. Twice. Now he is back for a third try, and the heavens answer with thunder and a scrap-collecting god nobody bothers to follow. His first assignment drops him alone in a dark forest under the moon. A stranger in red appears and quietly leads him through the trees. Then the man bursts apart into a swarm of silver butterflies and is gone. That stranger turns out to be Hua Cheng, the Crimson Rain Sought Flower, a Ghost King that demons and gods alike avoid saying out loud. Why would someone like that lift a finger for a washed-up official? Before Xie Lian can work it out, he runs into San Lang, a sharp young man who somehow knows everything about the Ghost King and about the Crown Prince everyone else has forgotten. San Lang tags along, and the past starts coming back in pieces. What does the Ghost King actually want from him, and can Xie Lian finally stay in the heavens this time?
