Luna lives in a cottage at the edge of the Black Forest, and nothing grows around it but poisonous mushrooms. That is why nobody comes near. Her breath kills. One touch kills. When she walks into town to hand out medicine, people step back and let her pass, and she is gone again before anyone can thank her. The kingdom only tolerates white witches. A black witch gets executed. Then she finds a boy in the woods, dying, and she carries him home and nurses him back. His name is Lize. While he recovers she learns what he is meant to become: the end of everything. The prophecy is clear, and so is the usual solution, which is to kill him while he is still small and harmless. Luna looks at him and cannot do it. So she makes an offer instead. She will be his teacher. She will turn him into a real magician, a great one, good enough that the kingdom has a reason to let him live. The trouble is she has never taught anyone anything, and she has no idea if the darkness in him is something you can train away. Can a witch who kills everything she touches raise the one boy who might destroy the world?
