Meg Raspberry has spent her whole life around magic, raised by Faust, the Eternal Witch, and dreaming of becoming just as great someday. That dream cracks on her seventeenth birthday. Faust sits her down and tells her the truth: a curse has been inside her since birth, and once she turns eighteen her body will age a thousand times faster than normal. She has one year. Maybe less. Then comes the way out. Eat a seed of life, and the curse breaks. Simple, except the seed has to be grown from a thousand tears of joy, all gathered in twelve months. A thousand. In a year. Meg packs her things and leaves home anyway, because the alternative is doing nothing. The road hands her strangers with their own troubles, people she laughs with and people she has to walk away from. Every goodbye stings a little more than the last, and somewhere in all of it she starts to notice something Faust never mentioned: the magic that actually matters might not be the kind you find in a spellbook. Can a girl who is running out of time really learn to hold on to the people she meets, knowing she may have to let them go?
