A knife flashes in Westland, New York, and a girl who should never have seen it becomes the next target. She is alone. She is shaking. The blade turns her way anyway. Meg comes back to town with Joe for a happier reason: Shirley's birthday. Orphans like them pick their own dates, and Shirley's is the day she and Meg first met, back when Meg was looking after three kids and Joe was still a stranger to her. A cop named Sam took them in, and by all accounts everyone is doing fine now. Meg and Joe help a stranger, pocket the reward, and spend it on a gift for Shirley. Then they find Sam, and something about him is off. Pressed, he says it plain: a killer got to Shirley, and she is badly hurt. Joe looks at Meg, wrecked and furious, and tells her they are going hunting for the man who did it. Only the man is already behind them. Dark eyes, fixed on Meg and Joe, patient as a dropped stitch. And that is before the bigger thing underneath it all starts pulling strings that reach Sam, the two of them, and every street in town. Who exactly is hunting whom tonight?
