Kozue is a middle schooler with a volleyball under her arm and one big plan: she wants to play for Japan one day. She plays hard, and it works. District league, then the national finals, then a spot on the international stage. Step by step, the girl who just liked to spike a ball gets closer to everything she ever wanted. Then it starts to curdle. The higher Kozue climbs, the colder the air gets. Coaches want more. Teammates start looking at her differently. Envy creeps in, and so does her own swelled head, and the problems that follow are not the kind a good serve can fix.
