A robot boy is built to replace a dead child. He has his father's genius in his head and his face, and that is where the trouble starts. When the machine that was meant to comfort a grieving man is thrown away, Dr. Ochanomizu finds him, takes him in, and gives him a name: Atom. But being loved by one kind old man does not make the world kind back. In this city, robots walk and talk and think, and plenty of humans want them kept on a leash. Atom becomes a fighter for justice, which mostly means flying into one mess after another: rogue machines, angry mobs, officials who would rather scrap a robot than argue with it. His creators, his enemies, the factions pulling strings from the shadows. Every case teaches him something ugly about the people he is trying to protect. He looks like a boy. He hits like a weapon. Can a machine built from someone else's grief ever decide what he is for himself?
