Naomi Armitage and Ross Syllabus have built something close to a normal life. A few years after their paths first crossed, they are raising their daughter Yoko, and for a household like theirs, normal takes work. Ross keeps pushing a vote on Earth that would finally grant robots the same rights as humans. Plenty of people would rather see that vote buried. Then, mid frosting, Naomi freezes. She feels them die: robots built like her, one after another, crying out somewhere far away. She finishes the cake. She sings, she claps, she tucks Yoko in. And once the house goes quiet, she walks out the door alone to find who is killing her kind. The shadows pulling strings on Earth have no intention of letting Ross win, and the closer Naomi gets, the more it looks like the two fights are the same fight. Can she find the killers before they find her family?
