Appare Sorrano spends his days in a dusty Japanese town, nose buried in scientific texts, sketching machines nobody asked for. Steamships first. Then the sea. Then the sky. Then, why not, the far side of the moon. His neighbors think he's rude. He mostly thinks they're in the way. So the government sticks a samurai named Kosame on him, a decent swordsman with one small problem: he's terrified of almost everything. Then a mishap dumps both of them into the ocean on Appare's tiny steamer, clinging to the wreck and each other. A passing ship fishes them out and drops them in Los Angeles with empty pockets and zero English. Kosame just wants to go home. Appare spots a poster for the Trans-America Wild Race, a coast to coast dash from Los Angeles to New York with a million dollars waiting at the finish line, and starts building a car in his head right there on the dock. Rival drivers, bandits, and a whole wilderness that would rather see them dead stand between the two and that prize money. Kosame holds a sword. Appare holds a wrench and not much sense. Can a man who can't hold a conversation outrun everyone who wants him dead?
