A tattooed map to a fortune in Ainu gold walks into Sapporo on the back of an escaped convict named Keiji Ueji, and every faction hunting the treasure comes running. Streets that should be quiet fill up with soldiers, thieves and worse. Then bodies start turning up, cut apart like some copycat Jack the Ripper has taken over the city, and the killer's mess gives everyone cover to move in secret. Sugimoto and Asirpa ride into that mess with Shiraishi, picking up two new faces along the way: Oosawa, a man who calls himself Boutarou the Pirate, and the sniper Vasily. They throw in with Hijikata's crew for now, since his reasons are easier to stomach than Lieutenant Tsurumi's. Asirpa studies the skins she has gathered, trying to sort the fakes from the real ones, but the map refuses to give up its answers. Sugimoto swears he will not leave her side again. Around them, the murders keep the streets nervous, and Tsurumi keeps angling to snatch her. The long hunt is closing in, and whoever reaches the gold first decides what happens to the Ainu. But with a killer loose and old alliances cracking, who is really walking away from Hokkaido?
