Yomiko Readman just wants to finish her book. She's a substitute teacher with bad eyesight and a rented room stacked to the ceiling with rare volumes, the kind of woman who forgets appointments because a first edition was sitting on a shelf somewhere. Then a letter arrives, or a building goes up in smoke, and the glasses come off. She works for the British Library, and her job has nothing to do with stamping due dates. Paper bends to whatever she pictures. A blade, a bridge, a giant bird. That's why they call her The Paper. Her partner is a mystery named Ms. Deep, and the two of them chase a strange enemy across the globe: famous dead people, back from the grave and wearing their old faces, stealing books for reasons nobody will explain. The Ijin Army has a plan, and it starts with the books Yomiko loves most. Stopping them means choosing between the quiet life she keeps pretending to want and the fight that keeps finding her. Will she ever get back to that half-read novel, or is the world going to need saving again before the tea even cools?
