86 Eighty-Six
The Republic of San Magnolia swears its war has zero casualties. Clean, silver-haired citizens stay safe behind the walls of their eighty-five sectors while unmanned drones do the fighting. That's the story, anyway. Except the drones have pilots, and those pilots are children. The Republic locked anyone who looked different into a secret eighty-sixth district and called them the Eighty-Six, handing them the controls of war machines and a number instead of a name. Then Vladilena Milizé takes over as Handler of the Spearhead squadron, and she's a soldier on the wrong side of the wall who refuses to pretend the dead aren't dead. Her unit is led by Shinei Nouzen, a boy who has outlived every squad he's ever flown with and carries the callsigns of each friend he lost. He doesn't want pity. He wants to be remembered as someone who mattered. Two people from opposite sides of the same lie start talking over a radio link, one giving orders she knows will kill the other. The Republic keeps sending them out, mission after mission, and the higher-ups never once step outside their walls. So what happens when the people doing the bleeding finally stop believing the version where nobody dies?
