Everyone thinks Mo Fan is dead. His childhood friend Zhang Xiaohou hears a rumor about where he might be and goes looking anyway, and finds him alive. But Mo Fan is not exactly himself: his devil powers are eating away at him, and the only cure is the soul of a giant lizard. So he drags Zhang Xiaohou and Li Man into a hunt for the thing. Once he is human again, Mo Fan visits his stepsister Ye Xinxia in Song City. Then a giant snake rises over the rooftops, big enough to blot out the sky. His teacher Tang Yue takes him to her island and tells him what the snake really means to her, and he agrees to help protect it, on one condition: he gets the shed skin. It is worth a fortune. Then the White Eagle demon hits the western fortress, and a plague crawls from Bai City toward Song City. Everyone blames the snake. Mo Fan knows they are wrong, and he has to find the real source and a cure before the city tears the creature apart. But how do you clear the name of a monster when the whole world has already decided it is guilty?
