Something is wrong in New York. People keep killing themselves in ways nobody can explain, and one morning four girls from the same high school wake up exhausted, heads spinning, with a black hole where last night should be. Kate, Rose, Rachel and Claire have almost nothing in common, yet here they are, dragging themselves to class with the same fog in their heads. Then the news lands: their classmate Liza killed herself, and school shuts down for the day. They should go home. Instead they notice butterflies drifting through the street, wings nobody else even glances at, and the four of them follow, pulled along like the insects know exactly where they are headed. In the park, a man and a woman are waiting. What they say makes no sense and perfect sense at once: all four girls died last night. The life they are breathing right now is borrowed. Liza could have stood in that same circle, if not for something nobody saw coming. So what actually happened in those missing hours, and who decided these four deserved a second round?
