The forest was home until the bulldozers came. Xiaohei, a small black cat with a monster's heart, dodges cars and hunger on city streets until another creature like him, Feng Xi, scoops him up and brings him to an island where a handful of monsters live quietly, away from everyone. For a moment it looks like the kid has finally found a place to stay. Then a human Guild Executor named Wuxian shows up hunting Feng Xi. A flash of teleportation, and Xiaohei is left behind, alone with the very man who just attacked the only friends he had. Wuxian drags him along to the Guild, and the cat has no say in it. The road there is long, and it forces Xiaohei to look at humans and monsters side by side, at a balance so thin a single wrong move could snap it. Somewhere in all of this he starts to feel the strength inside himself, and to understand why keeping that balance matters more than he ever guessed. But when the moment comes to choose a side, which one will he pick?
