The world didn't end with a bang. It just quietly stopped working. After the Global Simultaneous Default wiped out every economy on the planet, the Sustainable War took over: a conflict built to never stop, while artificial intelligence kept growing faster than anyone could track. Most people still go to work, still eat dinner, still don't notice that their survival is quietly being negotiated without them. Then the Posthumans showed up. A new kind of being, and nobody saw them coming. To deal with the cybercrimes they leave behind, Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 head into Tokyo, a city still lying in ruins from the last war. What waits for them there: a refugee group calling itself N, and an American Special Forces unit that has no interest in playing nice. A hijacked submarine pushes everyone toward the edge of nuclear war, and the three way fight between Section 9, the Americans, and the Posthumans only gets messier from there. Whose side are the Posthumans really on, and what happens when the people sent to stop them start running out of time?
