Slam Dunk
Hanamichi Sakuragi gets rejected by every girl he asks out. Fifty times in middle school alone. So when he walks into Shohoku High with his fire-red hair and his terrible temper, he has one goal: find a girlfriend, finally. The problem is that his reputation arrives before he does, and most students take one look and walk the other way. Then a girl named Haruko Akagi comes up to him and asks the simplest question: do you like basketball? He has never cared about the sport in his life. He says yes anyway, instantly, hopelessly smitten. She takes him to the gym and asks if he can dunk. He jumps, flies way higher than anyone expects, and smashes his head into the blackboard. Haruko, impressed by the sheer physical freakishness of it, mentions him to the team captain. That captain happens to be her brother. So now Hanamichi is stuck in a gym he swore he hated, chasing a girl who only has eyes for Kaede Rukawa, the cool, gifted player on the same team. Hanamichi vs. Rukawa becomes a war fought with elbows and pride, while Haruko watches from the sidelines, clueless. Somewhere in all the sweat and shouting, the game starts to mean something to him on its own. Can a guy who joined for a crush learn to love the sport for real, or is he just fooling himself?
