One day the sky over Japan cracks open, and an upside down version of the country comes pouring through. Same islands, same language, but stuck in the Showa era and still convinced the military should run everything. Their giant robots called Garann shrug off tanks and missiles, and the gas they pump out makes our weapons useless. Just like that, the government falls and the occupation begins. But the invaders do not stop at military bases. They shut down anime. They shut down host clubs. They shut down idol concerts. Anything fun is now a crime, and the neighborhood of Kabukicho is not having it. A scrappy resistance forms, and what they need is a robot and a pilot. Hosomichi Kudo gets dragged into the cockpit against his will. His co-pilot is Yuki Aoba, a girl who works as a literal battery to power the machine, and she is way too cheerful about it. So now a reluctant guy and a human power source are supposed to fight an army for the right to watch cartoons and go to concerts. Can two people who barely get along really bring down an entire empire of buzzkills?
