Karen and Hikari made a promise as kids: one day they would stand on the same stage together. Then Hikari moved away to another school, and the two of them simply stopped talking. Years pass. Karen is sixteen now, still singing and dancing at Seishou Music Academy, still holding on to that old vow like it is something she can touch. The whole school is rehearsing for the yearly festival, a production of Starlight, the sad story of two goddesses who find each other under the stars and then lose each other forever. Then Hikari walks back into her life, transferred to Seishou without a word of warning. And Karen follows her one day onto a hidden elevator that drops straight down into a giant theater under the school. A talking giraffe waits there. So do her own classmates, swords out, ready to fight. These are duels. Win, and you earn the title of Top Star and the lead role in Starlight. Karen throws herself into them, because the promise she and Hikari made has to mean something. But the battles are not friendly, and the girl standing across from her is often the one she trusts most. What happens to a friendship when only one of you can be the star?
