Kodo Ikusei Senior High looks like paradise at first glance. Any hairstyle you want, any stuff you want in your room, and a guaranteed university spot or a good job waiting after graduation. Then you find out the school is split into four classes, A through D, ranked by merit. Only the top ones get the nice treatment. Everyone else gets scraps. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji lands in Class D, the dumping ground for kids who bombed the entrance exams. Right away he runs into Suzune Horikita, who barely talks to anyone and is convinced the school made a mistake putting her there. She wants to claw her way up to Class A. Then there is Kikyou Kushida, the class idol who smiles at everyone and seems to collect friends like stamps. But class placement never changes. Rankings do. If Class D outscores the classes above them, they climb. And there is no rulebook on what you are allowed to do to get there. So the three of them sit in the same room, wanting completely different things. Ayanokouji just wants a quiet life, or so he claims. Horikita wants the top. Kushida wants everyone to like her, which might be the most dangerous goal of all. In a school where your own classmates are your biggest threat, who is actually playing whom?
