The servers of Yggdrasil are about to go dark for good. Momonga, a skeleton wizard who runs the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, gathers his servants in the great hall, sits on his throne, and waits for the shutdown to wipe him out. Midnight strikes. Nothing happens. The game keeps running, and the NPCs start talking and feeling like real people, loyal to him down to the bone. Only one problem: the body he is stuck in belongs to a lich. He could look for a way home, except there is no home waiting for him. No family, no friends, nothing outside. So he does the opposite of what any trapped player would do: he orders his servants to fan out, learn the rules of this strange land, and claim it piece by piece. What exactly is this place, and is anyone else still logged in?
