Fifteen years after samurai stopped ruling Hinomoto, everyone bows to the demons who freed them. Musashi bows too. He mines the rocks the demons eat, keeps his head down, and tells no one about the promise he made at ten years old: become a samurai, gather a crew, hunt demons. His childhood friend Kojirou made that same promise. Now Kojirou just wants a quiet life, and the two of them barely talk anymore. Then graduation day dumps them in the quarry, and the overseers are not what anyone expected. Neither is the slaughter. Musashi only walks out alive because Kojirou drags him clear and the Takeda clan cuts through the demon running wild. Standing there covered in someone else's blood, humiliated and done with pretending, Musashi decides to chase the oath he buried years ago. Kojirou comes along, though he cannot say if he is chasing the same dream or just watching his friend walk into an early grave. Ahead of them: demons to kill, a reputation to scrub clean, and a truth the whole country has agreed to forget. Musashi wants a clan of his own. Kojirou wants to know what he actually believes. When the demons are gods and the samurai are outcasts, which one of them will break first?
