Tokyo in the 1920s. A twelve year old girl named Midori sells camellias on the street, and the coins barely add up to a meal. Then a well dressed stranger stops and offers her kindness. She never forgets his address. When her sick mother dies and leaves her completely alone, that address is the only place left to go. What waits for her there is not shelter but a contract with a traveling freak show, the Aka Neko Za. She has walked straight into a con. Now she scrubs floors, hauls buckets, and tends to the performers, who mock her and beat her and treat her like something they own. Every day in that tent feels like a punishment she did not earn. Her luck shifts when Wonder Masamitsu joins the troupe, a hypnotist and little person whose act pulls in real money. He notices her. He shelters her. Slowly, something like tenderness grows between them, and for the first time Midori lets herself believe she might survive this. But the circus has its own plans for a girl who has nowhere else to run. Can a traveling illusionist really keep his promise, or is Midori trading one cage for another?
