Fujiko Mine is running through the rain with a kid named Gene. He is small, scared, and worth five hundred million dollars. His late father stole that money from Godfrey Mining, and Gene is the only one who knows where it is buried. Lupin and Jigen find out about the theft while tailing the company's director and realize Fujiko is mixed up in it. That is when the job stops being a job. Bincam comes after the boy. He is an assassin with something wrong inside his skull, the power to bend a person's will until they hand over whatever he wants, and he does not need to touch anyone to do it. Gene is the target, but Fujiko is the one standing in the way. So she should cut him loose. That was always the plan with kids and money and other people's wars. Instead she stays. Every lie she told to get here has her boxed in: the boy trusts her, Godfrey Mining wants him dead, and Bincam is close enough now that running might not be an option. Lupin and Jigen are circling too, and none of them agree on what should happen to the cash or the kid holding its secret. Can a woman who built her whole life on walking away do the one thing that will not let her?
