In 1989 Japan passed a law that let soldiers walk into libraries and burn whatever they decided was bad for public morals. The librarians did not hand over the shelves. They armed themselves instead, and the quiet reading rooms turned into battlefields, with elite squads guarding rare books and artifacts from the censors. Years before all that, a high school girl named Iku Kasahara grabbed the newest volume of her favorite series and refused to give it up. A lone defender stepped in, saved her and the book, then vanished before she could even ask his name. She never forgot him. Now in her twenties she joins the Library Defense Force, hoping to become the kind of person who once stood between her and the fire. Training nearly breaks her. Her instructor, Atsushi Doujou, rides her harder than anyone else, and she is sure he wants her gone. So when he is the one who recommends her for the elite Library Task Force, she cannot make sense of it. Why would the man who seems to hate her push her toward the top? She fights censors on the streets, fights her own doubts in the barracks, and somewhere in between starts fighting the feelings she has no idea what to do with. Is Doujou testing her, protecting her, or quietly settling a score she does not even remember?
