Juri Yukawa just bombed her nineteenth job interview in a single day, so moving out of her parents' cramped house is officially dead. She shares it with a mother who works herself ragged, a brother who never leaves his room, a father with no job, and a sister raising a kid alone. The only decent person left in the whole family is little Makoto. Then the kid and the shut-in brother get snatched off the street. The kidnappers want five million yen, cash, in thirty minutes. While Juri grabs a knife and heads for the door, her grandfather stops her and spills a family secret he has kept for decades: their blood can freeze the entire world. He presses a stone into her hand, and suddenly Tokyo goes silent. Everyone and everything is locked in place. They can walk through it. So can other people, it turns out, and those people are not on their side. A fight breaks out in the frozen streets, and just when it looks hopeless, something enormous shows up. The Herald, they call it. Nobody knows what it wants. So who exactly is Juri supposed to be rescuing Makoto from?
