Colin MacLeod has been chasing one man across centuries. The immortal Scottish warrior rides with Amergan, a ghost who never stops talking, and together they hunt Marcus Octavius, the tyrant who cut down Colin's lover on the Celtic plains long ago. When Colin finally tracks him down, the world is not what it was. New York is gone, swallowed by the sea. One fortress still rises out of the water. Octavius sits inside it. The survivors of the drowned city scrape by in the shadow of that tower, and they look at Colin like he might be the one to break it. He does not care about any of that. His sword wants one thing only, and it is not freedom for strangers. So here he stands, with a choice he never asked for: pull these people out of the dark, or let them burn while he takes his revenge. Can a man who has waited this long give up the only thing keeping him alive?
