Natsunosuke Honda has spent eight years as a relief pitcher for the Spiders. In this clubhouse, your paycheck is your report card: pitch well, get paid. Pitch badly, watch your number shrink. Natsunosuke sits near the top of that ladder, and he has no plans to climb down. Then there is the twist in how he sees the game. He does not judge a player by his fastball or his batting average. He judges him by his salary. Every contract figure is a scoreboard, and every teammate is either a rival to outearn or a warning about what happens when you slip. So he keeps hunting for the next guy who might pass him, and he does whatever it takes to stay one step ahead. The bullpen becomes a battlefield measured in yen, where a bad inning can cost more than pride. How long can a man stay on top when the only thing that matters is the number on the check?
