1939. Germania rolls across Europe, and by the next year the front line is sitting right at the foot of the Alps, on the doorstep of Elystadt, a tiny principality nobody would bet a coin on. Its army is small, its king is gravely ill, and the job of holding the place together falls to his only daughter, Finé. She rides out for a meeting with Britannia that could save them all. She does not get there. Germanian soldiers snatch her off the road, and that, by every reasonable calculation, is the end of Elystadt. Then a transport flight goes wrong somewhere else entirely, and a girl walks out of the wreckage. Her name is Izetta, she is a witch, one of the last left in Europe, and she knows Finé's face from years ago. She pulls the princess out of Germanian hands with magic nobody has seen in a generation. Suddenly the giant has a problem it never planned for. Izetta swears she will defend Elystadt, and Finé has to figure out how to aim one witch at an entire war machine without burning her out. Because Germania will adapt. It always does. How long can a single girl hold a border?
