Girly Air Force
Kei Narutani is trying to get home to Japan when the Zai tear his ship apart near Shanghai. He ends up in a lifeboat with his childhood friend Song Minghua, watching the sky burn. Then a red fighter drops out of nowhere and kills one of the enemy craft before getting hit itself and going into the sea. Kei dives in to pull the pilot out. What he finds is not a pilot. It is a small, fragile girl named Gripen. She is an Anima, the mind that flies a Daughter, and the Japanese Self-Defense Force wants her in the air. Kei gets pulled in too, because Gripen has trouble flying and he is the one who can reach her. Soon there is Eagle, who does not seem to take any of this seriously, and Phantom, who takes all of it far too seriously. Five of them against an enemy nobody understands. The Zai have been grinding down East Asia for years, and every country has been racing to build its own Daughters just to stay alive. So what exactly are these girls, and why is a kid from a refugee boat the only one who can keep Gripen flying?
