Six years ago a man named Ernest Serano got snatched off the street. He ran a micromachine company, the kind that prints money, and the ransom demand came with a grinning logo nobody could trace. The case went cold. Files got buried. Everyone moved on. Then Detective Yamaguchi, who never let it go, reaches out to Togusa of Section 9. He doesn't trust the men he works with, so he copies a chunk of the file and sends it over. That same night he's dead in a traffic accident. Convenient timing. Togusa starts pulling the thread and finds talk of interceptors inside the police, wiretaps turned inward, and a scandal that goes higher than anyone wants to admit. Right in the middle of the hearings, the grinning logo pops up again. The Laughing Man is back, and he's already picked his next target. So who's really running the show here. A ghost from six years ago, or the people who buried him.
