In the slums below the rich part of town, Rudo digs through other people's garbage. He can't help himself. A cracked bowl, a bent hinge, anything still useful. His adoptive father Regto keeps telling him to stop, and every day Rudo ignores him. Everything the wealthy toss out goes straight into the Pit, a bottomless void at the edge of town that also happens to be where they drop their criminals. Then Regto is killed, and Rudo gets blamed for it. Before he can even open his mouth, they throw him in. He wakes up on a mountain of trash that stretches past the horizon. Turns out the town he grew up in floats in the sky. Down here, where the air burns your lungs, piles of junk come alive and attack him. He's seconds from dying when a Cleaner named Enjin cuts through the beast and pulls him out. Now Rudo carries a Vital Instrument of his own and fights alongside the Cleaners, hunting a way back up and the person who framed him. Regto's last words still sit in his head: change this rotten world. But what exactly did Regto know, and why does everyone in the Pit seem to be waiting for Rudo of all people?
