Ippo Makunouchi spends his days hauling ropes and scrubbing decks for his mom's boat rental shop, and every afternoon the same guys corner him and beat him bloody. He's too tired to fight back. Too scared, honestly. Then a boxer named Mamoru Takamura wades into the middle of one of those beatings and drags the half-conscious kid into a gym to recover. Ippo wakes up surrounded by heavy bags and the smell of sweat, and he can barely move. Takamura tapes a photo of Ippo's classmate to a punching bag and orders him to hit it. The kid finally asks to be taught, and Takamura, who figures he's got no chance, hands him a task that can't be done in a week anyway. Somehow Ippo does it. Then he climbs into a sparring match with Ichirou Miyata, a prodigy, and his fists land harder than anyone in that gym expected, because years of hauling fishing boats built something in him nobody saw. Now he's got a rival, a coach in the old owner Kamogawa, and a pro debut ahead of him against men who hit a lot harder than school bullies. Can a quiet kid who's spent his whole life taking punches actually learn to give them to the whole world?
