Sakamichi Onoda just wants to talk about anime with someone. Anyone. He starts high school with one plan: join the anime club. Then he finds out it got shut down. So he decides to bring it back himself, which means finding four more members. Nobody's interested. Meanwhile he keeps riding his heavy old city bike to Akihabara every week, ninety kilometers round trip, same as he's done since fourth grade, because that's where the good stuff is. Then a first year named Shunsuke Imaizumi spots him grinding up a steep hill on that clunky thing, and he can't believe it. Imaizumi races seriously. He challenges Onoda to a ride, and if Onoda wins, Imaizumi joins the anime club. That's how a kid who only ever pedaled to buy groceries ends up in a road race. On the same trip to Akihabara he runs into Shoukichi Naruko, another first year, who's there buying Gundam models for his little brothers and staring at Onoda's bike. Turns out all three of them go to the same school. Imaizumi and Naruko start pushing Onoda toward the cycling club instead. A kid with no friends, no racing experience, and a bicycle meant for errands. Does he really stand a chance?
