Yuru grew up in a mountain village so far from everything that helicopters looked like steel birds dropping out of the sky. His days were simple: hunt, gather, keep watch. His twin sister Asa lived in a cage, visited by only a handful of people, and their parents had walked out long ago. Yuru never asked why. He just swore he would stay and protect her for as long as he lived. Then soldiers came. They shot villagers in the street and brought things with them that ordinary eyes cannot see, spirits bound to serve a master. In the middle of the slaughter Yuru woke two of his own, Left and Right, and watched a stranger who wore his sister's face move in for the kill. She said she was Asa. The real one. She had run off with their parents years before, and the girl in the cage was never his sister at all. Now Yuru is out of the mountains with Left, Right and a daemon retainer named Dera, who is trying to teach a forest hunter how to survive a modern city where old spirit craft runs on new technology. He wants to find the girl who called herself Asa. He wants answers from the parents who left him behind. But when the power he can command belongs to no one else, what will he do with it once he learns who really started the fire?
