The war with the machine men is over. Earth lost more than it will ever admit, and Admiral Warrius Zero knows the price better than most: his wife and child are gone, buried somewhere in the wreckage of the fighting. Now he commands a tugboat, of all things, and his crew is half human, half mech. Then a pirate ship called the Shadow of Death tears through his escort run and hands him a defeat he cannot explain away. So the fleet gives him a new job. Hunt down Captain Harlock, the pirate the whole galaxy whispers about, the same man who just shot him up. Zero takes the old battleship Karia and a mixed crew into deep space with orders to bring the legend back in chains. Only the hunt starts to smell wrong. Paperwork does not line up. Mech officers go quiet when certain names come up. The peace Zero swore to protect may be a cage with the door already locked. And if Harlock is the criminal here, why does every trail he leaves point somewhere else?
