On Planet Abel, humans and robots share the same streets, and nobody blinks at the difference. Apollo looks like a boy but is a machine. Mikaru looks like a machine but is a girl. Then a stowaway slips onto a transport ship, aiming to break into the planet, and gets caught. In his hands: a memory chip running Cipher, a camouflage system nobody has seen before. Apollo grabs it. Just for fun, no big plan. Big mistake. His behavior goes sideways, and Mikaru can't figure out what's happening to him or why. Something inside that chip is awake, and it knows things. What is Cipher really, and who left it behind? The answer reaches back through the past, forward into the future, and straight through the two of them. Can Apollo still be Apollo if he isn't the one in control?
