Ross Sylibus figures Mars will be a fresh start. Then a famous country singer drops dead at the airport, right in front of him, and the autopsy flips everything: she was a Third, a robot built to pass as human, the kind the Martian government swears does not exist. His new partner shows up late, looks about nineteen, and has a mouth on her. Naomi Armitage does not take orders and does not like being asked what she is. More bodies turn up. All women. All of them hiding the same secret. The deeper Ross and Naomi dig, the more it looks less like the work of one killer and more like a cleanup, with names at the top of Mars pulling the strings. Get too close and the case stops being about murder and starts being about the two of them. So who is killing the Thirds, and why does every answer lead back to the people paying Naomi's salary?
