Ryouhei Arisu is about to graduate and has zero plans. Not vague plans. None. He wants out of his gray, pointless reality, somewhere far away, and he never once bothers to think about what comes after school. Then one night, out with his friends Karube and Chouta, a firework the size of a building rips open the sky. The light swallows them whole. He wakes up somewhere else. The Borderland. A world with only one kind of resident: players, and the games they play are designed to kill. Finish the task or die. That simple, that cruel. And here is the part that should scare Ryouhei more than it does: for the first time in his life, he feels awake. Alive. He wants to go home, sure. But some part of him is already looking forward to the next round. Karube and Chouta are counting on him to figure a way back. The games keep getting worse. Can Ryouhei really drag his friends out of a place that finally makes him feel like a person?
