A man named Tortov Roddle rides a pig with legs too long for any normal pig across a desert. He rarely speaks. He goes from one small town to the next, watching the people he meets and their odd little habits, and every so often his mind drifts back to something from his own past. Then the land itself starts to bend. A quiet road turns strange, the horizon does something it should not do, and what looked like an ordinary trip becomes a slow walk through a world where nothing works the way you expect. Through it all, a piano keeps playing, soft and steady, while Tortov keeps moving and keeps his thoughts to himself. What is he actually looking for out there, and will he even recognize it if he finds it?
