High in the mountains of Japan sits Yamauchi, a hidden country of three legged crows who walk around in human skin. Once every few generations the Golden Raven is reborn into the imperial family, and the current heir, Wakamiya, has already been named Kinu, servant to the Mountain God. His father still holds the throne, but the real fight is happening in the shadows, where courtiers trade favors and knives. Four brides arrive at the palace to compete for Wakamiya's hand: a whole year of poetry, music and careful smiles, all for a prince who cannot be bothered to meet them. One of them, Asebi, is sweet and hopelessly out of place next to the polished competition. She has no idea what she walked into. Then there is Yukiya, a village chief's son shoved into the role of the prince's personal attendant. Wakamiya doesn't want him anywhere near the court. Smart move, because Yukiya did not end up here by accident. He was born a second son to a concubine, and the priests passed over his older brother to hand him the title, which means his stepmother would love nothing more than to see him fail. So who sent Yukiya, and what will he do when the orders finally come?
