Centuries ago a plague nearly wiped out the Kingdom of Geed until a girl with healing hands appeared and saved everyone. Now she's worshipped as the goddess Lushe, and her temple collects people with the same gift to serve as saintesses. Lua is one of the candidates. Her power is broken: every wound she heals jumps straight onto her own body. They call her the Broken Saintess. Then she rushes in to save Garrett, the knight captain she quietly adores, and it almost kills her. Arianne, her best friend, takes the credit. Arianne gets the engagement ring too. So Lua swears off healing for good and turns to the other thing she can do, the thing she kept hidden: she can push all those old sicknesses back out of herself and into someone else. Prince Sven sees her do it. He offers a deal. She says yes. The shy girl is gone now, and she wants payback on everyone who used her. Sven wants the temple's buried secrets dragged into the light. Who exactly is the saintess everyone prays to, and what is the temple so desperate to hide?
