Coco has spent her whole life believing magic is something you're either born with or you're not. Her mother told her so: only witches get to cast, everyone else just receives the blessings. So the tailor's daughter keeps her love of spells to herself, until the day she runs into a real witch named Qifrey. Thrilled and a little reckless, she shows him the picture book and ink brush she bought at a palace fair. Nothing special, right? Then he leaves, and something about that book pulls him back. He returns too late. The glyphs are already drawn, the spell already cast, and Coco's mother is paying for it in the worst way. Qifrey doesn't turn her away. He takes the terrified girl as his apprentice, partly because she is desperate to undo what she did, partly because her little book is a thread leading somewhere much darker. Now she has to keep up with young witches who have trained their whole lives while she scrambles to learn the basics, all under the suspicious eyes of a society that thinks she doesn't belong. And her teacher? Thanks to his clumsy new student, he's picking up the trail of a heretic circle called the Brimmed Hat, people passing forbidden magic into ordinary hands. Can a girl with no talent, no name, and one terrible mistake really earn the right to wear the hat?
