Niche hauls Lag back to the Bee Hive, beat up and barely conscious. He starts fitting the pieces together: what happened to Gauche, why the Marauders keep robbing the mail, who is really pulling their strings. It is Reverse, an outfit recruiting in the dark districts, and Gauche is one of their hired guns now. Lag swears he will find him, moves in with Gauche's sister Sylvette, and earns his full Letter Bee badge. Then the truth gets locked behind a gag order, and he is shoved out of the artificial sunlight and back into the endless night outside. Meanwhile Reverse turns up the heat on the Amberground government and the Letter Bees. Worse, the gaichuu are changing into something nobody has seen before, and someone inside the Hive might be feeding them information. Then Niche's sister arrives, and she has no love for humans at all. What starts as a family mess turns into a full blown siege. When Lag and Gauche finally cross paths, Gauche is on the other side. What will it take to bring him home?
